Preset management tutorial

Hi all

I was asked if I could put together a tutorial for the preset system since issues arise with folk from time to time.

This is my first attempt. It may have errors or need further clarification so please let me know. It includes a resource schematic.

No feedback will tell me it's perfect, which I doubt!

Cheers

Excellent! Goes right to my FS documentation folder. Loads of valuable information in there! :geek:
Many thanks, Spogg! :)

I’ve reviewed the content of my tutorial and made a few changes:

I found that the Lock function can successfully be brought out on a switch for the user to decide.
I provided a modified Preset Manager module with this function. Tested in Reaper and it works as expected. The plugin user can now decide if any edits are saved when flicking between presets.

Main change was wrong information about changing the Preset Manager. The presets are not stored in the schematic as originally stated but “in” the preset manager itself. This is at the end of the document if you want to read it for more information.

Additionally I modified bits of text for clarification and corrected a couple of typos.

The new version is in the original post.

Cheers

One thing to note is that in the 3.0.9 latest alphas a lot has changed regarding the preset handling. You can finally export .fxp and .fxb files if you want not only text. Also, the preset modules will now have an "Order" parameter where you can specify which order the parameters will be stored. That means if you add a new control later for an update, and you put its order to be higher than the last one, your old fxb and project and everything will still load properly.

Thanks Adam.

Does the "order" thing only refer to the FXP/FXB stuff? I can’t see that it will make a difference to the .txt system.
Or… ?

When we get a final release of 3.09 I’ll need to update the tutorial I guess.

As far as I know the whole preset system was revised, so the order affects the parameter order inside the schematic, doenst matter if txt or fxp. Those are just two different formats you can save the presets as.

I wonder if we are allowed to talk about not just this, but all the new stuff, in public? I never asked, but normally developers prefer to get things done before announcing them?

Yeah but that's normally

Seriously, I didn't get asked to sign a NDA or even keep it quiet and personally I think it will do a lot of good if folk see that good stuff is coming. I guess the worst that could happen is that someone might delay buying a licence until the next release.
