Big Surf Spring Reverb, and MORE !

Postby rocknrollkat » Thu Jan 04, 2018 6:56 pm

Hi Gang,
It's snowing here in N.Y.C., what a great time to build that Spring Reverb (no pun intended !)!
Typically these spring reverb emulators employ over one hundred allpass filters to attempt this effect.
Huge, unwieldy and complex !
So I came up with another way.
This is my lab demonstrator, a prototype, nowhere near complete, but it works great !
Dead Simple as always, I've developed a REAL room size control, NOT the usual 'mix' control labeled as 'room size'.
My room size design mathematically emulates any 3 dimensional space from 1 cubic foot (a VERY small room) to Grand Central station. And the difference is amazing !
(And yes, a 1 gallon paint can DOES reverberate!)
Switch in my Spring Reverb module and hear what happens next !
I've included several presets to get you started, from a very nice basic reverb to an oil drum, girl's room, Grand Central station, and of course, several spring reverb presets to get you under way !
Like I said, this is a prototype, VERY simple, a 4 banger (cell) primary delay, a TUNEABLE secondary allpass filter, and my custom designed 4 element TUNEABLE spring emulator, not 100 + elements !
If you've ever dealt with real spring reverbs, you know they can get out of control if they're overfed, so be careful with the levels !
Also, if you switch between certain program sources, you'll get that classic 'kick the reverb cabinet' sound !
JJAAAANNNGGG !
The included .dll has been tested in Magix Samplitude X and works fine.
I'm going back into lurking mode, this is a gift to those who have treated me kindly, enjoy !

Cool! Just a suggestion, you should maybe limit the feedback controls to 0.99 or something because if its greater you get infinite feedback and it will just get louder and louder and my speaker nearly exploded

Hi Adam,
Believe it or not , the feedback controls are all under .99.
Spring reverbs can get unruly, that's what you're experiencing.
Just like physical springs, overfeed 'em with signal and they get out of control.
Did you ever kick an active spring tank ?
HUGE JAAANNNG noise !

This sounds really good Roxy!

I like the way that it can also sound a bit like a plate.

When I see something like this I always want to look under the hood. Any chance? No worries if not…

Cheers

Hi Spogg,
Thank you SO much for the 'props' (USA street slang for 'compliments') !
Yes, plates and springs have very similar transfer functions.
Adam wants to know why the unit can go into oscillation with the feedback well below unity.
I just completed a demonstrator that I think you will enjoy as well.
I'll contact you in a few days about your tour under the hood.
This is still a prototype, I'll keep you posted.

Best regards,
