Vernier pots, where are they when you need 'em ?

Postby rocknrollkat » Wed Nov 22, 2017 9:27 pm

Hi Gang,
Once again, I'm building a project that calls for some fine tuning of huge values.
I need a pot that goes from 1 to 1,000, and I need to pick off values in 1 digit steps.
Oh goody.
Where are those vernier pots when you need 'em ?
I guess it's time to develop my own.
Here's what I came up with, another Dead Simple approach to a problem that you many need to solve as well.
I've included 2 demonstrators, both read from1 to 1,000.
The first example is a typical vernier pot setup, and if you need to grab some REALLY tight values, I've included a fine and coarse vernier setup as well.
To use 'em, I set all pots to zero, dial in a value that is close to but BELOW the number I need, and sneak up on the proper value with the vernier(s).
Or you can do it like we did with the mechanical verniers, set the vernier in the MIDDLE of its range and then set a value CLOSE to the value you need and let the vernier dial do the rest, + or -.
Open up the pots and see how I arranged the values, you can set the values you need once you see what's going on.
Have fun with these pots and I'm sure you'll find a use for 'em down the road.

ROXY :D

Here's what I think is an easier solution...

Knobs have this feature built in. You just change a float value for the fine adjustment.

Hi Spogg,
Interesting alternative to my schematic, to be sure !
Just place your module inside a pot and it works all by itself, no actual 'hookup' required.
Works like a charm.
I like having the vernier knob on the front panel, I don't have to remember which pots have the feature, which don't.
Remember, at my age (70), keeping things obvious is a factor :D .
