possible to make an overdrive and dist properly?

should dist and OD be in grey line not blue? also is it possible to make this proper or can i make something with waveforms for this?

My understanding is that distortion and overdrive are effects so would normally be implemented in blue. In a Polyphonic instrument you could process in the Poly stream to provide non-linear transfer but the cpu would do this for every note sounding individually so this may not be the ideal way forward.
