After you select all components and click on "Make Module", the Fader doesn't appear in the GUI.

I'm sure I'll be able to build something of significance if I can get past Tutorial 1. ;)

just resize the module that you get after the "make module" step, so that you can see it. Then you can unlock the front panel (that's the lock symbol when you select a module) and move the slider to the position you want. That's not part of the tutorial, but maybe it's necessary.

Hey! Thanks! When the module is created it appears as a small grey rectangle. Clicking on G allows the resize, and all becomes visible. Funny though: the front panel graphic is enabled for the fader before the module is created, so this shouldn't in fact happen.

I'm also noticing some crashing on multiple undos with this simple project. Not reassuring.

But at least now I can get on with more complex and clever things. ;)
