-23 is the new suggested level. It was big news in 2014. But due to the complexity of the test and given they were pulses it just wasn't popular. So, they created a new kit in 2016 that made it a simpler method, the transient attack was just too hard to keep up with.

Anyways, this is My last post on this site, been nice. Glad I could share some real knowledge. but this schematic will be moved to My own site https://vstplug.com/

Careful with this. The technique reagarding measurement of LUFS is always the same, no matter the model. Momentary, short-term, max true peak come into play. The metering in LUFS (Loudness Units Full Scale) is particularly easy, as it refers to the digital 0 - 1 scale. In fact, 1 LUFS = 1 dBFS

The -23 LUFS for broadcasting is a recommendation for radio and tv. It doesn'T mean, your meter must somehow change the measured level to get to it. It is up to the sound engineer to reduce or raise the levels until -23 LUFS is shown on the meter. Since there was a lot of strange stuff in this thread, I thought I should point that out.

An EBU compatible meter features momentary and short-term measurement, additional true peak measurement and shows a meter in LUFS and a meter in relative scale LU. The signal is prefiltered (bass frequencies are made louder and other things to mimic human hearing). A true peak meter is not part of an EBU compatible meter, it should just signalise when -1 dBTP is exceeded.

The target Loudness should be selectable and is only of interest for the relative scale, as this scale will show the target loudness as 0 LU. No big deal in this, just a handy way to already consider loudness while mixing.

Regarding targets: Pretty much every big player has its own targets, like -23 LUFS for broadcasting, -13 LUFS for Youtube, -9 LUFS for Soundcloud, -16 LUFS for iTunes, -14 LUFS for Amazon Music.

Spotify, recommending the same Loudness level as Amazon Music, is the only one, that recommends a true peak max of -2 dBTP, all others -1 dBTP

We use Integrated Loudness [LUF] for all streaming destinations.

Oops my bad! Not momentary and short term, but integrated and short-term!

We been experimenting with using Short Term as a possible strategy. This comes from my talks with Ian Shepherd, looking at combining ST, IL, and overall Dynamic range [DR].

Coming from the land of VU's, Peak, and RMS measurements, I've been adapting to these new 'Standards'. [which still are changing], and the various methods that streaming services deal with Level. And still, many Clients cutting CD's.

Man, how old does it make me feel remembering sitting in Dr Polhman's Digital Tech classes, as he laid out the design for the Compact Disc. Now today ... bought a replacement Plextor burner for $35 bucks :| ... and a number of people don't even have a CD player anymore.

wow ...

IHeh. I still buy music on CDs, but they get ripped and stored away in case something gets lost. (The "own" gene is apparently stronger than the "borrow/rent/stream" gene in my DNA.)

Back in the day I had two of those 300-disk Sony carousel units...when those filled up, I ended up ripping everything and using an old laptop connected to the CD inputs on my receiver for playback. The current setup is running MusicBee, with the files themselves on the upstairs server and a cheap Android phone as the remote.

My girlfriend still keeps her CDs in a huge CaseLogic bag (even though they're also ripped onto the server), but that's so she can take her vintage boombox out into the front garden. But I think there are a couple of Bluetooth speakers in her future, come birthday time. 8-)
I keep a pair of oven mitts next to my computer so I don't get a concussion from slapping my forehead while I'm reading the responses to my questions.

I am with you on the ownership. I ripped all of my CD's and stuck them in many totes down in the basement. This is my lifetime collection since I was young and I do subscribe to Amazon Unlimited, but I have a plex server in my house too. I still have several burners from years past and many blank DVD/CD as well. It is rare, but you never know. :)
If I wanted to sell the collections, I assume they are only worth a few pennies each and not worth the time of dropping them off.

Boy, you guys are making me feel like Fred Flintstone! I do all my music listening with CDs. In the living room on an SACD deck, and in the bedroom on a portable CD player plugged into a vacuum tube amplifier. :?

Yeah, but did you install an 8-track tape deck into your first new car? :D
