Re: Time limits for demo's
well a cracker or reverse engineer will spend as much time as it takes to get the result they require! and they do! its just a fact nowadays that most reverse's look for time bombs as it became so common for devs to use them!
when a team decide to reverse a piece of software they usually go through it with a very fine tooth comb, they don't just switch off the serial checks and go hey presto its cracked, far far from it RJH, if the coder is any good at all they will check every eventuality within the code and make sure they cover all the bases and quite often they even fix bugs within apps that were not noticed or fixed by the developer and the reverse's really enjoy publishing details of bug fixes they implement, this happens with most of the native instruments gear! and some versions of cracked kontakt have added features that were not made by NI but by the crack teams!
but yes sometimes inferior teams miss something and release a half crack but then other teams come along and fix that out usually within hours then gloat about it within the scene, hence you see the same software released by many teams all within hours of each other! its like a big competition between them!
remember these people don't crack software for p2pers to fill their boots and they are a very different species from music cd and movie pirates although you might get some completely uneducated shills come in and tell you different! its all about challenges, l33tism and sometimes with certain crack teams its about killing what they see as invasive protection methods!
some devs in the past have simply asked the crackers to stop cracking their apps and the teams have obliged and even went as far as giving advise on good protection! lol protection racketeering
online/ off board computing seems to be the thing nowadays, the next photoshop is to be a cloud app so adobe are saying, to beat piracy! but you could try using a mixture of hardware ids, serial, and online authorization and see how it goes!
hide the authorization data within a wave file header or image file or even within a wave/mp3 file! (Steganography)
there is lots of things you could do to buy time to make sales before being raped and pillaged, another observation i have made over the last number of years is lots of folk claiming that they made no money because they got cracked when in reality it was because the software they were peddling was no better than readily available freeware
so make something intuitive and individual or with unique features or sound, "but mine looks great as opposed to that freeware" does not cut it, most musicians couldn't give a flying fig what it looks like but concentrate on how it sounds or handles!
regards

Re: Time limits for demo's
I think it does matter how it looks.
I am a visual artist too,
and can't handle eyesores.
It doesn't have to be a work of art-
but if a plug doesn't fit my aesthetic,
I won't use it.
For example if FL changed it's name and allowed skinning it would be no2 DAW.
I don't mind simplicity, but some stuff doesn't make the graphical cut for being inharmonious/unpleasing 2 me eye.
I won't challenge crack teams.
My plugs aren't worth trying to implement anything atm. I f I felt I had something-I dunno.
If I did, I would have no saving- ie. no preset manager.
Then the crack would have to be a bought copy-
which can be watermarked.
I would blacklist the purchaser.
I personally don't use cracks for more than ethical reasons.
I'd like my systems to function & my data reasonably secure.

Re: Time limits for demo's
ya know ... maybe I've been going about this all the wrong way.
What if I laid out the specification for the app that I need .... and let the hackers program it !
You know ... get rid of the 'middle man' ......... ME
So let me get this right ... let's suppose we knew how to code some type of time bomb. By that, I'm referring to a delayed disabling of the app. Let suppose some crazy delay time, like one month .... or maybe 3 if you like.
HOW would they even know that:
1. that a TB even exists ... even if they pre suppose it does.
2. what would 'identify' a TB different from the rest of the code.
and
3. how in the world would they know they caught everything.
I'm not expecting any real answers ... but if you want to have a laugh ... go back with a search on this topic, oh quite a few years ago ... same reactions and response ... maybe some people don't want to envision their hero having to work up a sweat
... the clouds are moving in, pc sales are dropping even as the price does ... tablets are overtaking [funny, no hard drive storage ... but web access. Maybe we should do a community project ... you know, something that could be an app, but no one is quite sure what it is till it's cracked.
All said and done ... if I decide to release another app ... it may be by 'invitation only'. WITH CONDITIONS. Back in the day, personal names were embedded and displayed... straight from the credit card. OH, maybe not exactly like the old days ... in the meantime ... let's get this thread back on topic before 'Drnkhobo' comes back in and yells at us again !!!

Re: Time limits for demo's
It's been stated that it's not very hard to decompile an .fsm,
so they can go over all the lines, undoing my watermark thing,
and maybe finding the time delayed crippler too.
More OT, sorry-
but talking about phones and tablets-
we need an .exe wrapper? hmm

Re: Time limits for demo's
I thought I read differently regarding 'what' could be exactly seen via a decompiler of SM or FSM dll's.
For my own education, maybe there is a decompiler recommended [preferably free], that at least I could see what it would show ? Might answer some question ...

So been doing some digging and found this app PE Explorer. Its the only one I found to decompile and de-assemble.
The results are weird (cause i dont understand it) but in the decompiled "view" you can select "string display". This is what comes from a exported vst with nothing more than a stereo amp inside. . . .

theres a WHOLE lot more!
it seems that references to ALL of FS' prims are here! I dont know why maybe its because the the exported vst "shell" needs to know where they all are in case you use them. so your "code" gets placed in this shell??? I dunno, its interesting tho

Re: Time limits for demo's
i don't even know what I'm looking at in a hex editor lol
RJH they need to extract your code with tools and know and be able to read and understand the code then sometimes change it and recompile it and in other instances they somehow get key/serial info and make a keygen that your protection system happily accepts, they often make patches that remove demo protections and the cracks sometimes change windows files to prevent internet checks or plant fake permissions into the reg, sometimes all of them! a huge array of ways but they need to be able to read the code first!!
I used to think "why don't they make cool stuff if they are so leet" and quickly found out that many of them do whilst some are quite young geek types, upcoming!, and are highly skilled programmers! the original reverse engineering clans were born out of the Demo scene, and they did not spread the software about, there was no internet ha ha! file sharing is doomed now anyway so the cracking will still go on but it will go back underground and it will get better for the developer!
would it not be simple enough to make a timebomb system in ruby? hee hee for Trogg and Myco!
what parameters would be required to set it off and disable the app? I made simple timeout and noise modules back on SM, but that was just for demo time limiting done in green, run for a period of time and then shut off or introduce noize into the output!
a timebomb normally needs to know by making some sort of delayed check to see if the software was altered or a serial or license had not been issued or was a duplicate of a customers one, not on a authorized machine from hardware info or some thing that alerts it to activate the bomb!
I am not saying either that software should not look good, what i meant is there is such an array of very capable, excellent sounding and looking freeware available so to attract the people who you want to buy it, musicians, producers, etc it needs to really do more than look nicer or have a better layout (which is opinion anyway) i am talking functionality, quality of sound, unique features or ease of quality results, flexibility etc, something to make the customer, say, a creative who is purchasing a new tool, actually want your software!
regards

Looked up the PE Explorer app ... cost is $129
So, the question B ... can we see enough with the demo ... or ... anybody know of a similar free one
thx

Re: Time limits for demo's
there are a ton of tools available for disassembling and lots of free ones, think some of the best ones are underground tools made by reverse engineering types! you can find some on black hat sites!
here is a freeware one similar to PE explorer! http://www.ntcore.com/exsuite.php
I'm sure i have seen it said before that all the primitives are wrapped into every export from SM/FS even hidden unfinished ones not available to us, donno maybe I'm wrong!
what are you looking for anyway?
