Do you mean flowstone or an exported EXE?
What kind of shematic did you use? Is it a shematic with timing?

Ok sorry to tell, but i fear it is no Flowstone Problem.
It seems to be a Problem on Windows 8 that the HID deviced Need a Focus on the Programm that the HID date of the Joystik Comes trough.
If you go to Devices ans rightklich on your stick as select "Settings" and then Properties you get the Joystic konfig of Windows. If you un-focus this Windows the data of the stick is not provided to the Programm it seems.
EDIT you just said you have win 7. Ok well maybe there are also Problems with 64bit because i did something similar on Win7x86 some time ago.

Well midi Controllers don't have those Problem. But in normal case midi Controler are not designed to use as a Gamecontroller.
Korg hast this "Korg Nano" Line - This Controllers are not verry expensive and not as great. Another would be a phidget Input, but i don't know much about that yet.
