Opened a project in FS4, now won't open in 3.0.6

Post by k brown »

Ugh -

Forgive me if this has come up before, but I inadvertently opened a huge 3.0.6 project in FS4, and now it won't open in 3.0.6. Unfortunately I hadn't yet saved a copy to an external drive. Is there any way to 'fix' it so it'll open in 3.0.6 again?, or am I just screwed?

If you saved it with FS4 and have no other copy, then you are screwed indeed. The only way is to rebuild everything. You can c&p code, but other than that,…

Did this myself at some points. Luckily my newbie synth was tiny compared to now when I accidentally saved it in FS4.
Hard to keep track of FS version one is using at the moment.

I still work in 3.08 (test in 3.06 sometimes). But I always have to open it in FS4 to add crucial prims/modules before doing final exports.

If it's an open project you can always split the schematic and post pieces here and let anyone that has time to spare recreate them in 3.06 from FS4 pieces...

What Martin said. Also, opening a project in fS 4 does nothing to the file. Only saving it will make it a FS4 file.

OK, thanks all - I didn't think I'd saved it while in FS4,, but obviously I had, because 3.0.6 starts to open it, then just shuts down.

What I found odd, is it doesn't show the pop up saying 'This was created using a newer version...do you want to open it anyway?; it just shows the loading meter, then shuts down.

Live and 'loin' . . .

That is indeed strange. Either the file itself is corrupted (which has nothing to do with FS4 then) or maybe...

...let me ask the annoying question: Did you do the clean 3.0.6 install I recommended?

Other than that, I wouldn't know. The files are version checked, before loading anything. Which means, it is a 3.0.6 file. That's the only thing I'm sure of.

Yes, I removed the 'copied over from another computer' version of 3.0.6 and did a proper install. Works just fine (except for toolbox with empty tags). Was using no problem for days till I inadvertently opened that project in FS4. All other schems open just fine in 3.0.6.

I think you may be right that the file got corrupted somehow. It's just an FS4-only project now.

Thanks for the tips.

Curiouser and curiouser -

One thing I hadn't yet tried, was opening the problem schem on a different computer with 3.0.6 (I have it on 3 different laptops).

Opened fine. I'm thinking now to try uninstalling 3.0.6 on the machine that won't open it, and re-installing.

At least I know I can work on the schem in 3.0.6 on the other machine.

Actually, it makes sense to me. It still is a 3.0.6 file, which I was sure of. You could also prove now, that it is not corrupted.

On the other hand, the empty tags issue is a clear indicator, that you don't have a proper installation yet of 3.0.6 on that machine. I recall that quite a few people had this issue in the past, and there was a fix posted here on the forums. But I don't remember under which keywords it can be found.

It's quite possible, that solving the empty tags issue also solves the issue with the schematic.

I bet you’ve already done this, but have you looked in your Recovery folder? If there’s a file in there I would move it out or delete it.

[username]\Appdata\Roaming\Flowstone\Recovery

I recently had a strange crash when opening FS. After trying various things I deleted the recent.dat file and that fixed it. I believe it simply stores the last few toolbox items you used.

I don’t run FS4 and FS3 on the same OS disk because I don’t want FS4 writing anything to my Appdata folder, in case it’s not compatible with FS3. For example, if you save an FS4 module into the toolbox what happens when FS3 scans it?

I don’t want to find out!
