Quilcom DAXOPHONE
Quilcom DAXOPHONE
When someone suggested I should have a go at a Daxophone, I assumed they meant a Saxophone, but they didn’t! The instrument is an invention of Hans Reichel in the 80’s and consists of a tongue made out of thin wood, mounted on a wooden block which uses piezo contact microphones for amplifying. The “Dax” is a shaped block of wood that the player slides along the tongue to vary pitch and timbre. It’s normally played with a violin or cello bow and can make a huge range of bizarre sounds and effects, very few of which could be described as “musical”! My Quilcom version aims to recreate a subset of these noises and to give a kind of feel for what a real one might be like to play.
